Somewhere between the 12th and 15th century we started to have the structure of the rosary. There were 50 Hail Marys said and they were associated with the lives of Jesus and Mary. They were also associated with various Psalms. This form of prayer became known as the rosarium, which means rose garden. It was in the 16th century that we started with the five decade rosary and this established the three sets of the mysteries.
The person who formulated the rosary the way we have it today was St Dominic. It was said that he did this due to a vision from Mary our Blessed Mother. There are some people that do not hold to this ,because it is not recorded in history. It is therefore only a tradition within the church.
When Mary appeared to the three children at Fatima and told them to pray the rosary every day to bring peace to the world and an end to the war. Mary told Lucia how to pray the rosary. She told her to pray it like this "When you pray the Rosary, say after each mystery: 'O my Jesus, forgive us, save us from the fire of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those who are most in need.' " Here is a link to a the entire event http://www.theotokos.org.uk/pages/approved/words/wordfati.html . Here is another excellent article on the apparition of Our Lady http://www.americaneedsfatima.org/Apparitions-of-Our-Lady/ . Here are some actual pictures from Fatima.
You will find those out there that will say the praying the rosary is blasphemy against God ,because Jesus is Savior. There are others that will say that the rosary is not biblical and that is is useless recitation of prayer. First the individual needs to understand what the rosary is about and second what actually is being said. Here are some very good links about the rosary http://www.catholic.com/tracts/the-rosary and here is another link that should be entirely read http://www.thecatholicanswerman.com/id67.html . I would also suggest to check this link as well http://www.ewtn.com/devotionals/prayers/rosary/scripture.htm . My final advice about this subject of the rosary is to speak to or get all information from a catholic source. I have seen many times that individuals interpret things with their eyes or what they hear with their ears and not by the truth.
There is truth in the bible that the repetition of prayer does exist. In other words not all repetition of prayer is in vain. In fact in " Luke 11:1-4 He was praying in a certain place, and when he ceased, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples." [2] And he said to them, "When you pray, say: "Father, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. [3] Give us each day our daily bread; [4] and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive every one who is indebted to us; and lead us not into temptation." I would check out this website for more information http://socrates58.blogspot.com/2010/07/jesus-by-his-own-example-teaching.html .
Here are some illustrations of how to pray the rosary.
There many different kinds of rosaries out there. There is the traditional 5 decade rosary as well as other rosaries called chaplets. The prayers in a chaplet are different than the traditional arrangement of prayers. They are sometimes used for a particular denotation to a saint or cause. There are also ring rosaries and bracelet rosaries as well. They are smaller and can easily be carried. There are many many different kinds of rosaries.
