Assumption of the Virgin By Peter Paul Rubens |
This is always a hard topic for people to grasp. It seems to produce quite a few different views. There isn't any actual date for the Assumption Of Mary. I have read that it may have been the dedication of some church, but there isn't any information for that either. Saint Theodosius has said that it was celebrated in Palestine before the year 500. This is the only feast of our lady in Rome.
There are two places that lay claim to be the place of her assumption. The first one is Jerusalem and the second place of her assumption is Ephesus. The most popular choice by most people is due the the fact that her tomb is in Jerusalem. Here is a link to the Catholic Encyclopedia page on the Assumption Of Mary http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/02006b.htm . 50 Then he took them out as far as the outskirts of Bethany, and raising his hands he blessed them.
It is also in Mark Chapter 16 verse 19 "19 And so the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven; there at the right hand of God he took his place, "
A better account is seen in Acts Chapter 1 verses 9 through 11 where we read "
9 As he said this he was lifted up while they looked on, and a cloud took him from their sight.
10 They were still staring into the sky as he went, when suddenly two men in white were standing beside them,
11 and they said, 'Why are you Galileans standing here looking into the sky? This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will come back in the same way as you have seen him go to heaven.' "
Another account of someone going bodily to Heaven was in the old testament. This was in 2 Kings chapter 2 verse 11 when Elijah was taken to Heaven " 11 Now as they walked on, talking as they went, a chariot of fire appeared and horses of fire coming between the two of them; and Elijah went up to heaven in the whirlwind. " What ties this together for me is that later in the bible in the new testament you have the transfiguration on the mount when Jesus talks with Moses and Elijah. So as you see this assumption does happen in the bible.
Above are three videos on the Historical Assumption of Mary Our Blessed Mother that you may finds interesting.
I guess what it all comes down to is a matter of faith.
Thank You for reading and have a blessed day.
