What Are You Giving Up For Lent

I can remember growing up as a young kid in the Catholic Church and they would always ask what are you giving up for lent. What I seem to remember is oh I am giving candy for Lent. Now there is nothing wrong with giving up candy. In fact my Mother said she is giving up candy for Lent. It kind of made me laugh, because she is in her 80s. Then what made me laugh again was when she said she just wanted to have some candy on one day. I said Mom the whole point is to give it up for Lent and not have any until Lent is over. Everyone wonders where we as kids get our ideas from.

So you may have asked yourself what should I give up for Lent. Maybe as a child you could give up some of your allowance and put it in the collection at Mass. What we really should be giving up for Lent is something that causes us to not pay attention to the Catholic Church. It should be something that is taking us away from thinking about Jesus. I guess we are just human beings and we tend to take the easy way out. maybe you could stop watching some program on television and sit down and do some reading in the Bible when you would have been watching your favorite television program.Maybe you could take that extra time you have and go spend it in front of the Eucharist praying for others.
Below is a short common list of things that we give up for Lent Television or their favorite show/channel
  1. Internet or certain websites
  2.  Coffee, alcohol or a favorite drink
  3.  Desserts, candy
  4.  shopping for fun
  5. Using credit cards
  6.  Going out to eat
  7. Playing Video Games
  8. - Sitting around the house
  9. Watching your favorite tv show
  10. Eating a second helping at supper
Obviously some of the items in the list may seem easy to do. They may also seem like an easy way out. I believe it is better to do something that do nothing at all.
Thank You for reading and maybe leave a comment as to what you are giving up for Lent.
